The First IMC Teacher Education Program Has Been Awarded Full Accreditation by MACTE

We have just been informed by the Montessori Accreditation Commission for Teacher Education (MACTE) that the Center for Guided Montessori Studies (CGMS) early childhood Montessori teacher education program in Kingston, New York has been granted full accreditation.

The Center for Guided Montessori Studies is the first pilot Montessori teacher education program recognized by, and affiliated with, the International Montessori Council.

All of us at the Montessori Foundation and the International Montessori Council congratulate CGMS Educational Director, Kitty Bravo, and her terrific faculty, for their hard work and very well designed innovative program.

International Montessori Council (IMC) teacher education programs offer a new approach to Montessori teacher education. by blending three elements:

· a highly structured 18-month distance education program, presented by well known Montessori teacher educators Jonathan Wolff, Kitty Bravo, Drs. Ann and Paul Epstein, Cathy Perolman, Frank Leto, Tim Seldin, and many others. The distance learning program is highly structured, and students work closely in cohort groups with our faculty of Montessori teacher educators.

· a low residency face-to-face academic program, designed to meet all IMC and MACTE standards.

· a year of student teaching in an authentic Montessori class under the supervision of a qualified and experienced Montessori teacher.

The CGMS program represents a complete and very thorough 18-month distance learning course of study in Montessori education. The program includes more than 350 hours of online videos of the course lectures, lesson presentations with children, videos of children and teachers at work in excellent Montessori classrooms, recorded discussions with experienced Montessori teachers, online forums and discussions, individual conferencing, and other up-to-date distance learning technologies. Students spend about 15 hours a week on the online coursework.

During the distance learning course of study, students complete a year-long half-day student teaching experience under the supervision of a formally trained and experienced Montessori educator in a mature and fully equipped Montessori class of three, four, and five-year-old children.

Students may elect to take just an IMC recognized distance learning program and year of student teaching, without enrolling in an IMC recognized face-to-face academic program, to earn an IMC associate Montessori teaching credential.  All three components are needed to earn a full IMC teaching credential.

The first IMC recognized pilot program, the Center for Guided Montessori Studies (CGMS), currently offers an early childhood Montessori teacher education program. Additional Programs, as well as new courses at other age levels are beginning to be developed.

Speaking personally as one of the founders of CGMS, I am especially proud of what has been accomplished. We all know how important it is to prepare more Montessori guides to meet the growing demand. We also know how difficult it is to find people who are willing and able spend months, or years, away from home to earn their Montessori diplomas.

Our goal in developing this new model was to explore how the possibilities presented by recent innovations in Internet communication technology-from streaming video to world-wide internet based conference calling-might make it possible to take the extra time needed to provide deeper insights, information, and understanding for many elements of teacher education that do not require live face-to-face contact, and to offer closer ongoing support to students throughout their student teaching experience. What we learned is that distance learning has become a worldwide phenomenon and it works! While distance learning does not appeal to every learner, it offers a convenient alternative path for the children of the computer age (i.e. many of us today!).
